Q&A with Kenneth Nelson
Q: What brought you to Mosaic?
A: I was 14 when I discovered Mosaic. I have been an actor since elementary school and was in love with theater. My parents were looking for a program that would challenge me and fulfill my acting bug. They discovered Mosaic and the rest is history.
Q: What’s the most impactful thing you learned/gained from participating in Mosaic?
A: I think the most impactful thing I learned in Mosaic was confidence as an actor. The year I was there I landed the lead role as King Oberon/Theseus in “What Fools These Mortals Be” in 1997. I was honestly terrified. We performed on some of the biggest stages and largest crowds ever. I can recall performing at Music Hall in front of a sold-out crowd! I was so scared I would forget all of my lines, but I didn’t. Rick’s leadership, guidance, and faith in us, really gave me the confidence I needed to pull off the role.
Q: What are you up to now?
A: Right now, even though I don’t act any longer, I’m still in entertainment and media production. I’ve written, produced, and directed two feature films. One film, “Sincerely, Brenda” was nominated for 44 awards and has won 19 awards domestically and internationally. It can be seen on Amazon Prime, Tubi TV, as well as many other platforms globally. My second feature is called “I Vow,” a film about the beautiful but challenging journey of marriage. When I’m not producing films, I work with brands to help them tell their story through my company, Ray Media Creative. Ray Media Creative is a visual branding and storytelling agency. I get to blend my love of cinema and directing into branded content and it’s very exciting.
Q: Is there anything about your Mosaic experience you carry with you in your work? In life?
A: What I carry from Mosaic is that confidence in my gifts and abilities. No matter how big the opportunity may be, I know that I can overcome any adversity and rise to the challenge.
Q: What, if any, difference/impact has Mosaic made in Detroit? In the world?
A: Mosaic has been and is such a game changer for youth that are passionate about the arts. Mosaic introduced me to a world of acting I never knew existed. It helped me believe that my dream is possible. I’m confident it has done that and continues to do that for so many youth that will go one to make an impact in their community and globally.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
A: Mosaic is one of those experiences that you never forget. The moments and the people, I’ve never forgotten. It’s had such a profound impact on my life as an artist. It’s the benchmark.
Q: Please finish the phrase “Mosaic is…”
A: …magical.
