Q&A with Catherine Tolbert-Wilson

Q: What brought you to Mosaic?

A: From a young age, my grandmother would always ask me to sing her favorite songs during our family gatherings. Those songs were often by Etta James or Celine Dion. It was through these experiences that my passion for singing was ignited. When I was in either 9th or 10th grade, my mom approached me with an exciting opportunity to join Mosaic. Although I was initially nervous, I mustered the courage to audition, and the rest is history!

Q: What’s the most impactful thing you learned/gained from participating in Mosaic?

A: Participating in Mosaic Youth Theater of Detroit has been an incredibly transformative experience for me. The most impactful thing I have learned and gained from my time with Mosaic is a profound sense of self-confidence. Prior to joining Mosaic, I was incredibly reserved and hesitant to step outside my comfort zone. Singing in front of others and performing seemed daunting, and even meeting new people made me nervous. However, my experience with Mosaic quickly shattered those apprehensions. I discovered that Mosaic is like one big, talented family, and I realized there was no need to be anxious. Through this supportive community, I learned to embrace vulnerability, shed my timidity, and open myself up to new opportunities and connections.

Q: What are you up to now? Is there anything about your Mosaic experience you carry with you in your work? In life?

A: In 2021, I proudly earned my degree from Central Michigan University, majoring in Interior Design and minoring in Business Administration. Shortly after graduation, I embarked on an exciting venture by opening a selfie museum called Good Day Selfie Museum, in Downtown Ferndale. My aim was to provide a welcoming space where individuals could embrace their true selves and feel empowered. Additionally, I recently launched my digital series called Everything Good TV, which focuses on fashion, beauty, and showcasing the vibrant essence of Metro Detroit. The show’s primary objective is to promote the idea that personal style should not be confined to societal norms. Inspired by Mosaic’s mantra of “Only the best, nothing less,” I carry this mindset into every endeavor I pursue, ensuring a commitment to excellence and authenticity.

Q: What, if any, difference/impact has Mosaic made in Detroit? In the world?

A: Mosaic Youth Theater of Detroit has made a significant difference and impact both locally in Detroit and in the broader world. In Detroit, Mosaic has served as a beacon of artistic and personal growth for countless young individuals. By providing a platform for creative expression and nurturing talent, Mosaic has empowered youth to discover their potential, build self-confidence, and develop essential life skills. The organization’s performances have enriched the cultural landscape of Detroit, fostering a vibrant arts community and inspiring audiences. Mosaic’s influence transcends geographical boundaries, demonstrating that young voices and artistic endeavors have the power to inspire, unite, and effect positive change.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

A: Deciding to audition for Mosaic was a life-changing choice. The impact it has had on me is immeasurable, and I will forever hold the treasured memories of my time with Mosaic close to my heart forever. I often find myself reminiscing about those cherished moments, longing for the sense of belonging, growth, and camaraderie that Mosaic provided.

Q: Please finish the phrase “Mosaic is…”
