Q&A with H. Adam Harris
Q: What brought you to Mosaic?
A: My father found out about Mosaic from a co-worker. I came home from school one night and he told me to change because I had an audition. I’ll never forget the drive up to Fort Wayne or the audition process. But I was so confident when I left that I just had to have made it in.
Q: What’s the most impactful thing you learned/gained from participating in Mosaic?
A: A sense of community. I can’t believe the way we all took care of each other. Onstage, offstage, in lobbies, on trips, and everywhere there was a lot of love and care. The support when you met or exceeded expectations. The sense of trust. All combined to create a place where you could be your best self.
Q: What are you up to now? Is there anything about your Mosaic experience you carry with you in your work? In life?
A: I’m currently a freelance director, actor, teaching artist, and the Artistic & Audience Engagement Associate at South Coast Repertory. We had great teachers, great mentors, and people who believed in our capacity to be brilliant. I bring that same energy to every room I’m in.
Q: What, if any, difference/impact has Mosaic made in Detroit? In the world?
A: Mosaic took so many young brilliant artists and brought out the greatness within us. It revealed pathways and possibilities that changed lives.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
A: I’m so thrilled that DeLashea is the current leader of Mosaic! It was an honor to see her work ethic, her creativity, and her compassion in person for so many years. What a perfect full-circle moment.
Q: Please finish the phrase “Mosaic is…”
A: …joy in action.
