Q: What brought you to Mosaic?

A: When I watched a show called “Zoom” on PBS, I saw a cast and crew of kids my age, directing and acting in their own show segments. I thought that was cool and started to dream about directing my own plays and movies. I was originally introduced to Mosaic by Ken Anderson who was the art director and fellow church family member of Greater Southern Missionary Baptist church. He brought the Mosaic singers to our church to sing in the choir and their performances were always flawless. Totally different technique than how we were singing in our own church’s youth choir. When I learned more about Mosaic and the other programs they had to offer, I auditioned for the tech crew and was very excited to have gotten in. I had also auditioned for acting. I read the monologue and even I knew I had no idea what I was doing at the time. I didn’t get into the acting program but I was able to learn so much watching the moments that were created on stage as I focused on the audio, lights and eventually stage management.

Q: What’s the most impactful thing you learned/gained from participating in Mosaic?

A: I learned how to put in the work. Being in the tech crew meant working long hours, getting your hands dirty, practicing, using your brain to strategize, being a professional and staying cool under pressure. These shows were live, and we were putting on big time productions. My heart used to beat so fast trying not to miss a cue during showtime. It was so exciting. Live theatre is the best. Learning how to set up a full-blown audio design, correct audio issues as they come up, put up lights, and even dabble in carpentry all while in high school made me a pro before I even joined my college programs.

Q: What are you up to now? Is there anything about your Mosaic experience you carry with you in your work? In life? 

A: Right now, I’m a Senior Manager of Programming and Marketing Streaming Channels, with over a decade of experience working in sports, tech and entertainment video. I’m well versed in content management and scheduling channels for various platforms including OTT, AVOD, SVOD, Social and YouTube. I have worked with major media companies such as FOX Entertainment, Big Ten Network, Vizio, USA Today, ESPN, and PBS. When I became a stage manager during my last year at Mosaic, I found my voice in leadership. FOCUS UP, owning my truths and moving ahead with confidence is what I carry with me throughout my career as a product of Mosaic.

Q: What, if any, difference/impact has Mosaic made in Detroit? In the world? 

A: Mosaic created a safe place for creative minds to roam. I was a quiet and shy girl from the west side of Detroit, with huge bold dreams, that needed guidance, focus and skill sharpening. I received that at Mosaic. When I interviewed for my first job out of college, the HR manager said wow I haven’t seen anyone else so young with so many years of experience. I got that job and have been soaring in every sense.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share? 

A: The quality of singing that I was surrounded by throughout my high school years attending MOSAIC developed quite an ear. As an audio engineer and a person that can hold a note as well, I’m very critical. You cannot just tell me you can sing. My ear really has to agree. Lol

Q: Please finish the phrase “Mosaic is…” 

A: …foundational. The launching pad for owning your creative abilities and impacting the world in beautiful ways.
