Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit is an internationally renowned out-of-school creative youth development organization. Through rigorous theatre and vocal training, Mosaic’s arts education, college prep, and workforce readiness programming helps children ages 7-18 develop the critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success on stage and in life. We are seeking a results-driven Communications Manager to join our busy team as internal and external-facing thought-partner, manager, creator, coordinator and liaison. The Communications Manager reports to the Executive Director and works across all departments in the organization to develop and implement marketing and public relations tactics that align with strategic organizational goals and objectives. This individual will create, develop and manage marketing communication initiatives, internal and external communications and special events and theatrical/musical promotions; monitor marcomm trends and budgets; and work individually and collaboratively with staff, contractors, freelancers, interns, vendors and the community to manage the communications function. Role requires some evening and weekend work.

Major Accountabilities

Project Management: Demonstrate strong project management skills in support of strategic marketing communication plans and initiatives targeted to Mosaic’s key past, present and prospective constituencies (audiences, young artists/families, alumni, teaching artists, community partners, funders, volunteers, board members and other supporters).

  • Manage the execution and production of high quality advertising and promotional materials
  • Be involved with all promotional projects from inception to completion
  • Serve as liaison between organizational/artistic teams and agencies/vendors
  • Complete all projects on time and within budget
  • Work with ED to monitor budget spend for marcomm team
  • Oversee MarComm Committee comprised of staff, board, parent, young artist and community members
  • Assist with RFP review and development

Media Relations: Responsible for overseeing communications to the media, including preparing articles, press kits, press releases, and other content initiatives. Ensure the company protects and promotes its image in a proper, coordinated, and consistent manner.

  • Cultivate, enhance and manage collaborative working relationships within the local, regional and national press and publicity community
  • Compose, edit and prepare and distribute bylined articles and press releases about Mosaic, its activities, achievements, partnerships, etc.
  • Pitch stories, train and prep spokespeople for interviews
  • Maintain a comprehensive PR list of media outlets, relevant blogs, SoMe influencers, calendar and event sites, etc.
  • Create, gather and disseminate timely information to press and staff
  • Manage the flow of news about the organization to the media
  • Plan and oversee press events
  • Detect public relations issues as they emerge and address them directly
  • Research and write briefing materials
  • Assemble press kits
  • Respond to media inquiries and monitor coverage

Marketing Communications: Develop and implement strategies for increasing and targeting reach, awareness and impact. Strive to add value and insight through innovative ideas, cost savings and overall knowledge of marcomm plans, tactics, trends and best practices.

  • Create, develop, place and monitor results of print and online advertising
  • Create, develop, disseminate and monitor results of multichannel e-blasts, newsletters, etc.
  • Create and develop impact reports for sponsors, funders, board members and key volunteers, etc.
  • Work collaboratively to develop and manage web site content
  • Work collaboratively to create video, audio, and other multi-media content
  • Work collaboratively to create, develop and manage social media content
  • Create and develop marketing collateral, organizational literature, presentations and speeches for internal and external use
  • Work collaboratively to develop the annual report, plan and execute the annual meeting
  • Review content for accuracy, compliance, and visual appeal in support of strategic objectives
  • Work collaboratively to develop and execute a volunteer recognition program
  • Serve as brand steward, overseeing brand standards and logo usage/restrictions

Merchandising: Work collaboratively with staff and MarComm Committee to create, develop and market new and existing merchandise via online and on-site channels

  • Manage on-site inventory, including ordering, vendor relationship and adhering to budget
  • Coordinate merchandise sales at community, studio, and theatre shows and other on-site opportunities.
  • Responsible for on-site merchandise sales including set-up, sales, management of merchandise volunteers
  • Adhere to proper finance procedures in reporting merchandise sales and revenue
  • Monitor sales and generate monthly reports

Job Requirements

Education: Four-year degree with emphasis in PR, communications, marketing, journalism, advertising or related field (or equivalent experience of 1 ½ years per degree year) required.

Languages: English. Spanish or Arabic helpful.

Experience: Minimum 4‐6 years experience in marketing, communications, media relations, and merchandising or related field(s).

  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills required
  • Confident communicator and presenter, including ability to present concepts verbally
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to secure cooperation with internal and external customers to meet objectives

  • Demonstrated appreciation for arts and culture. Personal artistry preferred.

Demonstrated Competency/Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current technologies, trends and best practices in digital media/social media
  • Strong knowledge of layout and design, professional printing/publishing. Hands-on design familiarity with programs such as Canva preferred
  • Familiarity with Google Suite products (Docs, Sheets, Gmail, etc.) helpful
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
